Application | Methyl 2-bromoisobutyrate is a carboxylate organic substance and can be used as an intermediate in organic synthesis. |
Preparation | Bromoisobutyric acid (4.17g,25 mmol) was dissolved in a solution of concentrated sulfuric acid (0.75 mL) and methanol (50 mL) and stirred under reflux for 2 hours. The solution is then cooled to room temperature and concentrated in vacuum. The residue is dissolved in ether and washed with 10% aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution, washed with brine, dried with magnesium sulfate, and vacuum concentrated again. Colorless oil (4.2g, 23 mmol, 93% yield) was obtained. |
